The culas are fortified civil constructions specific to the 18th and 19th centuries, spread around the Balkans. They were essentially residences of boyars, built for defence against Turkish invasions and plunderers.From the over 200 culas built in Oltenia, only 20 remain. In Dolj only the Cernatescu Cula can be visited today, with a village museum arranged inside.
