From the Middle Ages, the tradition of Calus dancing has stood as an emblem of Romanians. Nevertheless it is a custom troughout Romania, there is variety from one region to another and from one century to another. It is a complex ritual dance, with fertility and cure-related aspects. The Calus of today, perhaps free of beliefs and superstitions, is a spectacular dance of great virtuosity and choreographic mastery. The Calus Dance was included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2005.
