Welcome to Cherepishki Monastery!
The building of the Cherepishki Monastery is related to the history of the medieval “Koriten Grad” which existed in the nearby area “Ritlite”. According to the legend, the monastery has been named after the scarred bones of the warriors left after the battle of Tsar Ivan Shishman with the Ottoman invaders. The monastery was destroyed at that time.
At the beginning of XVIIth century the holy abode was restored. Over the centuries, the Cherepishki Monastery has always been the center of Bulgarian education and culture – besides the established monastery school, the Vazov Place, and the stays of the writer Aleko Konstantinov, there was a theological school as well as a theological institute in the monastery.
Nestled at the foothills of the Balkan Mountains, the monastery today impresses with its beautiful church, the ancient murals in the main temple and the architecture of the other buildings.
