Welcome to Bistretski Monastery!
Bistretsky Monastery is situated at the foothills of the Vratsa Balkan, 6 km to the west of Vratsa, over Bistrets residential area, where its name comes from.
In the vicinity of the monastery, according to an ancient tale, there was a Thracian sanctuary. Probably here were monastery buildings from the time of the First Bulgarian Kingdom. The monastery was destroyed by the invasion of the Ottomans, and twice more after that.
During the Renaissance there literary and educational activities were developed, a monastery school and a goldsmith workshop. In 1822, tin Bistretski monastery was founded the first copper stamping workshop in Bulgaria.
Over the centuries, the monastery has been abandoned and devastated several times.
Today, from the old monastery complex, the best preserved monument is the church, whereas the service buildings were built during its last renovation in the period 2005-2009.
Bistretski Monastery is a great example of how a forgotten and desolate holy place can be reborn.
