Welcome to “St. 40 Martyrs”!
The church “St. 40 Martyrs” was built and painted according to the will of Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Assen II in honor of his great victory over the Epire despot Theodor Komnin in 1230. In the middle of the XIIIth century the royal monastery “Velika Lavra” was built around the temple. The famous Tarnovo church is the center of a number of important events. Here one can find some of the most emblematic monuments of Bulgarian historical memory – the columns of Tsar Ivan Assen II with the famous inscriptions on them.
The contemporary archaeological excavations reveal the graves of prominent people from the Middle Ages – Tsar Kaloyan, Tsar Ivan Asen II and Queen Ana-Maria. The relics of St. Ilarion Maglenski were preserved in the temple. Here is also the tomb of Sava the Serbian.
The church “St. 40 Martyrs” is connected also to an extremely important event from the recent history of Bulgaria – the proclamation of Independence on 22 September 1908.
