Welcome to “Castra Martis” Fortress!
In the town of Kula, district of Vidin is the late Roman fortress “Castra Martis”. The fortress was discovered and diplayed by the traveler Felix Kanitz in the XIXth century. The fortress is part of the Danube border fortification and observation system of the Roman Empire after the loss of Dacia at the end of the IIIrd century, as part of the Bononia (Vidin) – Singidunum (Belgrade) route through the Vrashka Chuka Balkan mountains pass. The town of Kula is located at 40 minutes drive from the city of Vidin and 30 minutes from the town of Zajecar, Serbia.
As architecture, the fortress represents a square fortification with four oval towers in every corner. It is believed to have been built during the times of the Roman Emperor Diocletian.
In addition to the fortress “Kastra Martis”, Vidin district will offer you many museums, art galleries, riverbank places for rest and recreation, and to the south – mountain routes and beauties.
