Welcome to the Rock Monastery “St. Dimitriy Basarbovski”!
Basarbovo Rock Monastery is located in the valley of the river Rusenski Lom, near the village of Basarbovo, 10 km from the city of Rousse.
The rock monastery dates back to the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The most famous inhabitant of the monastery is St. Dimitriy Basarbovski, born in 1685 in the village of Basarbovo and who spent his entire life in the holy abode.
The path through which one enters the monastery passes through a beautifully landscaped courtyard and ends at a well dug by St. Dimitriy. Local people believe the water in the well is healing.
At the foothills of the rocks of the monastery, 48 steps lead to a rock site where, according to the tales St. Dimitriy slept in a niche.
Another stone staircase leads to a natural cave in which the monk Chrisant was buried – he was the man who restored and revived the monastery in 1937.
At present, Basarbovo Monastery is the only operating rock monastery in Bulgaria.
