The Clock Tower was built by the Turks in 1771. 22 m high, it was at that time the tallest building in town. It was built according to European-inspired plans, in the French architectural style. The tower was different from today and was included in the town’s fortress system. The tower was the main surveillance point on the advancement of enemies. Restored several times after that, the tower survided. The clock was only added to the surveillance tower in the 19th century, when the Turkish domination ceased.
