The name Strehaia comes from old Slavonic meaning “hidden”. The Craiovesti boyars built an estate including a castle and a church at the beginning of the 16th century. It is the only church in the country whose altar faces the south. The legend says that Michael the Brave (who was born in Strehaia) built the first church, but he did it at night, so he positioned it wrong with the altar facing south.
The Strehaia Monastery, as we know it today, was upgraded by Matei Basarab. In 1650.
