The Cosuna-Bucovat Monastery was built next to Craiova in 1483, on the shore of the river Jiu. The religious establishment is thought to be the oldest in the area. It was built on the place of the Roman castrum Pelendava using the stone and brick from the old roman settlement. The only building still maintained from the old abbey is the church. Characteristic of the church are 365 paintings of saints at the entrance – each responsible for a day of the year – or a type of Christian Zodiac. In the seminary, which is part of the complex, the young representatives of the church get their education.
