This site is part of the floodable lowlands of the Danube, where the river divides into two branches. It is located on the route of a significant migration corridor, so it is an important place of reproduction and rest for some rare bird species. A LIFE project was funded by the European Union for protecting these islands, which are thought to be very important for bird species such as the saker falcon, the white-tailed eagle and the Dalmatian pelican.
